Crochet: Best Baby Cloche and Tutorial

I am excited to be contributing to luvinthemommyhood today as part of their Babyhood Bonanza. I feel like a babyhood bonanza of my own at the present as I'm shortly expecting my third girl in a little over four years!

Motherhood has not come easy for me in terms of actually getting my children here and I feel so incredibly fortunate and blessed to now find myself with these two darling daughters and a third on the way. The phrases, "late bloomer, " "better late than never," and "good things come to those who wait" come to mind! You just never know how things will turn out. I can't imagine my life without my little muses. While I've always sought creative outlets nothing has been more creatively fulfilling for me than nurturing babies into little children. The possibilities are so endless! The discovery process so fascinating. And the fact that they are individuals with their own opinions makes it even more interesting and challenging. I try to shape, but I also try to learn and I anticipate more learning in the future as they become more independent. Scary.

While I am surprised to find myself mothering three girls rather than some more varied combination, I just couldn't be happier about it (and their father is pretty spoiled too I have to say). Hard to imagine where I would direct all my creative energy if, for instance, I had three boys. I absolutely love knitting, crocheting, sewing, painting and throwing parties for my girls. My blog documents the activity and there's a lot of it going on lately as I'm in full blown nesting mode. So, I was thrilled when Shannon invited me to share something in the Bonanza.

I put this little crochet cloche on my nesting list and am sharing a pattern and tutorial for it today (great to have the motivation to actually document the pattern!). I made the original, little pink version, for my daughter, Scarlett, when she was born and loved it! I love a cloche on a little babe because it emphasizes her already large eyes.

The cotton yarn makes it super easy wash-and-wear and versatile in terms of seasons. And the worsted weight crochet means this is fast. I'm all about finishing so a love a quick pattern! This would be good for a beginner and would make a darling baby gift. Who can resist the oversized flower and eyelet edging? This hat is all girl!

You can find the PDF of the pattern (*UPDATED WITH SIZES 0-3, 3-6, AND 6-12 MONTHS*) and a full tutorial after the jump.

Thanks for the LUV, Shannon!

TUTORIAL: Best Baby Cloche
(Tutorial provides instructions for size 3-6 months only)

MATERIALS

• 1 skein Lily Sugar’n Cream 100% cotton yarn (or another worsted weight cotton/blend yarn)

• Size H crochet hook

• Yarn needle for finishing

GAUGE: about 4 hdc= 1 inch

CLOCHE

Foundation Ring: Chain four. Join with a slip stitch to form a ring.

Round 1: Ch 2 (counts as first hdc here and in subsequent rounds). 6 half-double-crochet in ring. Join with a sl st in top of chain 2. (You should have 7 hdc)

Round 2: Ch 2. 1 hdc in same space as last sl st. 2 hdc in each hdc around. Join with a sl st in top of ch 2. (You have increased 7 hdc for a total of 14 hdc)

Round 3: Ch 2. 1 hdc in same space as last sl st. * 1 hdc in next hdc. 2 hdc in next hdc. ** Repeat from * to ** around. 1 hdc in base of beginning ch-2. Join with a sl st in top of ch 2. (21 hdc)

Round 4: Ch 2. 1 hdc in same space as last sl st. 1 hdc in next hdc. * 2 hdc in next hdc. 1 hdc in next 2 hdc stitches.** Repeat from * to ** around to last hdc. 1 hdc in base of beginning ch-2. Join with a sl st in top of ch 2. (28 hdc)

Round 5: Ch 2. 1 hdc in same space as last sl st. 1 hdc in each of next 2 hdc stitches. *2 hdc in next hdc. 1 hdc in each of next 3 hdc stitches.** Repeat five times from * to ** around to last hdc. 1 hdc in base of beginning ch-2. Join with a sl st in top of ch 2. (35 hdc)

Round 6: Ch 2. 1 hdc in same space as last sl st. 1 hdc in each of next 3 hdc stitches. *2 hdc in next hdc. 1 hdc in each of next 4 hdc stitches.** Repeat from * to ** around to last hdc. 1 hdc in base of beginning ch-2. Join with a sl st in top of ch 2. (42 hdc)

Round 7: Ch 2. 1 hdc in same space as last sl st. 1 hdc in each of next 4 hdc stitches. *2 hdc in next hdc. 1 hdc in each of next 5 hdc stitches.** Repeat from * to ** around to last hdc. 1 hdc in base of beginning ch-2. Join with a sl st in top of ch 2. (49 hdc)

Round 8 (this is the last increase row): Ch 2. 1 hdc in same space as last sl st. 1 hdc in each of next 15 hdc stitches. *2 hdc in next hdc. 1 hdc in each of next 15 hdc stitches.** Repeat from * to ** to last hdc. 1 hdc in base of beginning ch-2. (you have increased 3 hdc for a total of 52 hdc)

Round 9: Ch 2. 1 hdc in same space as last sl st. 1 hdc in each hdc around. Join with a sl st in the top of ch 2. (52 hdc)

Rounds 10-11: Repeat Row 9. (52 hdc)

Round 12 (this is a decrease row): Ch 2. 1 hdc in same space as last sl st. Hdc in the next hdc and each of the next 14 hdc stitches. Now you will work a decrease hdc [to dhdc, (yarn over, insert hook in next hdc, yo, draw loop through) two times, yo, draw through all 5 lps on hook]. *Hdc in next 15 hdc stitches. Work one dhdc.** Repeat from * to ** one more time and finish round with a sl st in the top of ch 2. (you have decreased 3 hdc for a total of 49 hdc)

(These following photos illustrate the decrease stitch)

(above photo shows work after first yo, insert hook in next hdc, yo, draw loop through...)
(above photo shows next yo...)
(above photo shows work after second yo, insert hook in next hdc, yo, draw loop through, with 5 loops on the hook...)
(above photo shows work after drawing final yo through all 5 lps on hook)

Round 13 (this is the eyelet row): Ch 3 (counts as first hdc and ch-1 sp). Skip the next hdc. *Double crochet in the next hdc. Ch 1. Skip the next hdc.* Repeat around and finish with a sl st in the 2nd ch of the beginning ch-3. (25 ch-1 spaces and 25 dc)

Shell edging:  Ch 3. Dc in same space. Skip the next ch-1 space. Sl st in the next dc. *Skip the next ch-1 sp. Work 3 dc in the next dc. Skip the next ch-1 sp. Sl st in the next dc.** Repeat from * to ** around to the last dc. Sk next ch-1 space. 3 dc in last dc. Sk next ch-1 space. Work 1 dc in base of the beginning ch-2 and sl st in top of the beginning ch-2 to complete the shell. (13 shells)

Fasten off. Weave in ends.

FLOWER

Foundation ring: Chain 4. Join with a sl st to form ring.

Round 1: Ch 2 (counts as dc). 13 dc in center of ring. (14 dc)

Round 2: Ch 5 (counts as first dc and ch-3). Skip next dc. *Dc in next dc. Ch 3. Sk next dc.** Repeat from * to ** around and finish with a sl st in the 2nd chain of the beginning ch-5. (7 ch-3 spaces and 7 dc)

Round 3 (this is the back row of petals): *In next ch-3 space work (single crochet, hdc, 3 dc, hdc sc).** Repeat from * to ** around and join with a sl st in the first sc. (7 petals)

Now slip stitch around the post of the beginning double crochet to work your way down to round 1. Slip stitch through the first skipped dc in that round. (This is easier in my mind than fastening off and joining with a new piece of yarn.)

Round 4: Ch 3. *Sl st in the next skipped dc. Ch 3.** You have created a ch-3 space in front of the first dc from round 2. Repeat from * to ** around and finish with a slip stitch in the base of the first ch-3.

Round 5 (this is the front row of petals): (sc, hdc, 2 dc, hdc, sc) in each ch 3 space around to form seven petals. Join with a sl st in the first sc.

Fasten off. Leave a longer tail of yarn to attach the flower to the cloche.

Attach flower to hat as pictured using yarn ends. Weave in ends.

*If you make a cloche please consider sharing a photo in the Flickr group. Thanks!*

I'm in love with this hat. Hopefully one day I'll have a girl so I can make one of these for her. Thank you!

I saw this today and just had to make it. I have only just recently picked up this new craft. I've gone around some receiving blankets in the past month, but I'm kind of considering this my as my first 'project'. I've got a baby girl arriving in the next 3 weeks and this was perfect. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! I love it!

Is it possible to adapt this to a larger size? I am sure the flower would stay the same, but how much would I need to add to make it for 6-12 months? I am wanting to make it as a gift but the baby is older :) Thanks!

Anneliese said...

Vicki, this can certainly be adapted...but I haven't worked it out yet. If you want to give me your email or a blog to which to post I can let you know when I calculate it. Thanks for your interest!

Hi Anneliese! I don't have a blog (yet). I have been trying to get around to starting one, but haven't gotten it going yet! :) Anyway, here is my email VickiNicki@hotmail.com. I would LOVE to hear from ya as I really want to make this for my niece! I am currently 8 months preggo with a BOY so no flowers for him! but at least I can dote on my niece with girly fun stuff:) I look forward to hearing from you! Thanks again!

Anneliese, I tried to email you from the comment you made on my blog re: Flickr, but your comment has a "non-reply" email address. I wanted to let you know that I would glady join your Flickr page. My cloche is up and running on your set. Again, thank you!

Such a great tutorial! I'm going to start on it first thing Monday morning. I saw that you also have cute baby boots you made as well. Have you done a tutorial on them, or are you planning on it? Very very cute!

Cazra Dunford said...

I think I saw some super cutie booties too.....do you have a pattern for those? Love it!!

Anneliese said...

Thanks for asking about the booties. I do have plans to work up a pattern, soon I hope. Stay tuned for the post!

Unknown said...

Hey, I was wondering, I've tried the pattern twice now, and both times my cloche is wide, but not very long. I used the same thread and needle as you, and I followed the directions exactly. Is there something I'm not doing? (Do I need to make my stitches tighter?) Thanks!!

Anneliese said...

Cami, this is a shorter hat than most. It usually just covers the top of my baby's ears. If you would like it a bit longer I would suggest adding an extra row, or even two. Just repeat Row 9. Another option, if you think it's too wide, is to decrease one hook size and also add an extra row. Hope that helps! Thanks.

Thank you for this tutorial!! It is to easy to follow. I started this over my lunch hour, went back to work, and had it finished by 7:30 tonight. So easy and so cute!

As the mom of three boys, trust me you just express it differently...not so much crochet but wall murals, altered furniture, handmade clothes and toys...I did it all and have fond memories of each....a very cute hat and may be adorning my first grandchild's head this September should it be a little girl!

Love this hat and am working on getting my first one finished! Very easy to follow pattern - thank you! :o)

Lauren said...

Thanks so much! This is my first crochet project other than blankets and scarves. It took me a few tries, but I finally figured everything out--and it's ADORABLE! I love it and am sending it to my soon-to-get-here niece. Now I'm trying to adapt it for my 4 year old girl. Any tips?

Anneliese said...

Lauren, I'm so happy this worked for you! Congratulations on your first hat! I am actually planning to upsize this pattern for my four year old (currently working on other baby sizes)and should have it in the next couple weeks I think. So if you can wait I'll have an updated, upsized pattern for you. Thanks for your comment.

Lauren said...

Oh, I can wait. Every attempt on my own has come out too big, no matter how many times I try to check it on her first, lol! Thanks!

Thimbelina said...

Hi Anneliese,
Thanks so much for sharing this tutorial... I made my first baby Cloche from it last night and while it doesn't seem as deep as the one's you made, your pattern was easy to follow, even for a beginner. You can read about my attempt here:
http://thimbelinas.blogspot.com/2010/08/learning-new-skills.html
The only thing I was unsure of was where exactly to start the scallops from as I couldn't seem to crochet into the DC?
Thanks again

For those of you asking for additional sizes, I just updated the PDF file hosted on Scribd with a pattern that has additional sizes: 0-3 months and 6-12 months along with the original 3-6 months. The link in this original post still works. Thanks for your interest!

micheleh said...

I am not having any luck at Scribd. It won't let me print the pattern. It just seemed like Scribd wanted a lot of info and access to my Face Book account and then wouldn't let me print the pattern. Is it a scam?

Anneliese said...

Micheleh, I'm sorry you're having trouble accessing the file. I used Scribd to host based on some reviews--it seems to have a good reputation. And it looks like the file has been downloaded more than 700 times... They integrate with Facebook for profile information and to allow folks to post on Facebook what they are accessing on Scribd. In any event, I would be happy to email you the pattern if you want to make your email visible in your blogger profile, or post it for me. Thanks.

I just found your blog through Ucreate, and am so happy I did! :) I have never crocheted in my life, and have a little one due very soon. I read up on crochet stitches and patterns and tried my hand at your clothe pattern. I am happy to say that I am nearly done (still have to finish the border) and it is a success! :) It certainly isn't without flaw, but it has been the perfect first project. I can't wait to put it on my new baby girl, and look forward to making many more! (I will have 3 little girls as well. :) Thank you so much!

I love it! I made the cloche last night but am having serious trouble with the flower. Yours looks flat, but by the time I finish the first round of petals, mine is shaped like a cup! Never mind, I figured it out and the finished effect is darling! Thank you so much for sharing this pattern.

I love this hat! I am trying to make it right now for my 4 month old and well when I get to Round 3 I am getting 22 hdc's instead of 21. I have tried it 3 times already. I am goofing up somewhere and don't know where. I even tried using my stitch marker and still. HELP! Thank you!

I've tried the hat in all three sizes. I just wondered is the 3/6 month and th 6/12 month really that close in Size?? Mine have the correct number of rows.. just seems they are awfully close

Anneliese said...

Laura, the increases between those sizes are pretty small (I've found this with other hat patterns too), I guess because their heads are pretty small so every extra stitch makes a difference... I fiddled with larger sizes and they got too big too quickly but you could easily add an extra row and/or an extra increase if you'd like. These hats also stretch quite a bit if you are using the cotton yarn. The 18-24 mo hat I made has fit at 18 mos and 24 months because it keeps growing with my little girl! I hope the hats work well for you and yoru recipients! Thanks for the comment. -A

My mother made this for my little girl and I love it!! I am trying to make some more in different colors but keep coming out with too many stitches. I could have made 2 hats with all the undoing and redoing I've done. Any help???

Anneliese said...

Steph, I would recommend counting your stitches after every row. If you find you have too many you can pull out and redo dropping one of the increases (or however many) to get the right count. If you count after every row hopefully you won't find yourself too far off and needing to undo several rows. I find crochet is very forgiving and since there isn't a pattern you need to match in the body of the hat you will be pretty safe improvising a bit to get the count right. I hope that helps!

Carl and Steph said...

Thanks! Especially for the tidbit that it doesn't have to be PERFECTLY done according to instructions. Just so long that the count is right. I'll start the next one tomorrow.

I am new to crocheting and have mastered the DC, SC, but for some reason I am going wrong with the HDC, I get going and when its says to HDC (42) I have way more than 42... What am I doing wrong..lol Help Please! :)

Anneliese said...

@Florida Cracker girl: sorry to hear you are having trouble with the hdc. Here is a great online tutorial for that stitch: http://www.crochetspot.com/how-to-crochet-half-double-crochet-stitches-hdc/ I would recommend counting your stitches at the end of each row to be sure you aren't accidentally increasing by working two hdcs in a stitch or working an hdc into an extra space (this is especially easy to do at the beginning and end of a round) so that you don't complete a number of rounds and find you are way off. Much easier to correct as you go than to undo several rows to find where things went awry. I often count as I am working as it focuses my attention on each stitch. I hope that helps!

@funwith4: Thanks so much for asking. You are welcome to sell the hats you make with this pattern. If there is an opportunity to give me credit/link to the pattern that would be fantastic. Good luck with the auction!

Hey Anneliese! Just wanted to say I LOVE the pattern!! I made it in teal / blue / green for my friend when they didn't know the gender. I had the flower crocheted, but not tied on, with a note saying to attach if the baby was a girl (she was)! I was going to sell a couple in my etsy shop (etsy.com/shop/megncreations) and popped over to see copyright info. I see in the previous comments that you would like credit for the pattern, so I will definitely do that for you! Thank you so much for sharing your creativity with us all!

Carolyn Gx said...

Thank you Thank you! I'm making it now for my friend's baby. It's the cutest hat I could find on the web!

Unknown said...

Love the hat and flower, however I'm having a hard time with a couple rows...i've followed the pattern exactly and my count is still coming up more than 49 even though my row 11 has 52. wondering why the need to hdc in the same row as sl st at the start of the row?

Anneliese said...

@Erica: Sorry to hear you're having trouble with the pattern. The slip stitch is akin to the turning chain in straight crochet, where you would then hdc the first stitch, rather than the next stitch. I wish I could look atg your work and help you identify what might be different from the pattern, HOWEVER, the only thing that really matters is that you are getting the right number of hdc at the end of each row and that your increases are evenly spaced. So if you have more than 49hdc at the end of row 7 try it without making one in the sl st (I sometimes accidentally put in an extra hdc at the end of the row--so that might be happening as well) and see if you get 49. If you still have too many you could drop one of the increases. I hope that helps! - Anneliese

Unknown said...

Thanks for the help! Not sure what I was doing but I figured out the kink somehow....the 3rd time of undoing my row and starting over was a charm haha. This was the first pattern I followed and first hat I finished, so I definitely still consider myself a beginner. I've been trying out other patterns all night for a more "boy-ish" hat and I ended up coming back to this pattern because it just works the best. I'm learning not all patterns are created equal and I greatly appreciate the detail and accuracy in yours, THANKS!!

Anneliese said...

@Erica: That makes me so happy to hear! Yeah! By the way, this very evening I am working on a boy pattern. Hoping to have it "up" in the next week or two. Stay tuned!

Anonymous said...

Thank you so much for this awesome pattern! I have already made one, and it ended up being too small for my daughter's head so I gave it to my other daughter for her dolls. :0) I am working on #2 and this time I followed your yarn size directions (didn't the first time!) so it should turn out right, I hope!
I am linking you on my blog. :0)

Anonymous said...

I finished it, I love it! Thank you so much for the tutorial! I linked you on my blog with a picture.

Bex said...

Thanks for this - It's very similar to my "standard" pattern for making hats, but the little bit of detail at the end of a small decrease and how to finish off with the pretty shells on the edge finishes things off very nicely. I have now made 3 of these in different sizes within the last 24 hours :D

thank you for the flower pattern. found it on ravelry and it's the first one like this that I could read and get to work correctly! Great job.

I'm new to crochet and this is my first real project. I have a question...when working in rounds, does the seam usually curve or is there a way to make it come out straight? I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong or if that's just the way it's supposed to be.

Thanks!

Anneliese said...

@Anonymous: The seams in the round always "drift"! It's a bit frustrating I have to say. I have searched for a solution and there doesn't seem to be one. So yes, you are doing it correctly. I have noticed they don't drift when doing increases but do when maintaining the same stitch count. I have come up with a way to make them drift less and will be posting a revision to this tutorial and pattern in the next few days--check back please. Thanks.

I love your site and I even tried to crochet again. I haven't tried since I was a kid. Now I would love to have some projects to do at the beach in a couple of weeks. I started with the flower first thinking it was easier. The problem is I have no idea what the initials mean or even the stitches. Could you explain Round 2 as well as round 3 of the med flower.

I am so confused. Any suggestions or maybe a you tube video I could watch?

@Pondering: I'm so glad to hear you are trying crochet again. Patterns can sometimes seem like a foreign language! Here is a great place to start, it's a "how to crochet" series I just did for Tip Junkie, which includes explanations of all the stitches and abbreviations. Hopefully between this how-to and the tutorial here you will be on your way! Here are a couple of the TipJunkie links:

Hi! What an amazing crafter you are! This cloche was just what I was searching for. But I am having the same problem as Melanie (commenter on Oct. 14). If I count the ch 2 as the first hdc, and follow the directions exactly, I get one more than I should. Would you send me your hints, too? =)

Thank you!

I LOVE this pattern! I made a few for my then 7 month old last fall and got so many comments on them! She wore one every day! We just found out that the baby we are expecting this fall is another girl and I would love to make one for her for her newborn photoshoot. I have already made her one in the 0-3 month size but it still seems a little big for a newborn. Any ideas on how to make it smaller? Does the pattern need to be altered or should I just use a smaller hook? If a smaller hook is recommended, what size do you think would be best? Thanks so much for your help! You can contact me at thecampbellgirl_1 @ yahoo.com Thanks!

@Anonymous: I have found that Hobby Lobby's I Love This Cotton yarn is a smaller gauges. I would recommend trying it and going down a hook size. If it still seems not small enough you could eliminate one of the increase rows. Congratulations on the new baby!

Oh, help! I love this cloche, but I'm stuck on Round 12 of the 3-6 months size. Where it says "Hdc in the nex hdc and each of the next 14 hdc stitches," does that mean a total of 14 or 15 hdcs? Hope someone can help me!

Anneliese said...

@MLyle: The hdc in the sl stitch and the next hdc and the next 14 equal 16 hdc up until that point. I hope that helps!

Great pattern! Just wondering do we have permission to sell the finshed projects from your patterns?

Anneliese said...

@Dreichley: Thank you for asking. Yes, you may sell hats made from this pattern. I would appreciate it very much if you would give me credit for the pattern, however, with a link if possible. Thanks!

Thanks for the great pattern! I am a beginner crocheter and needed gifts for a friend who is having twins. She is having a girl and a boy. I made the girl's cloche as described with the flower. For the boy's, I changed it towards the end when I got to round 11. I repeated row 11 (decreased by two stitches), then did a round of hdc in each stitch, then did a round with 2 hdc in each stitch. That gave it a more rolled edge which I think might be more appropriate for a boy. They are both really cute. Unfortunately I don't have a baby to try out the fit - the closest I have to baby-head-shape is a grapefruit, and that isn't very close. :) Thanks again, I hope my friend will like them.

@Heather: Sounds like such a great variation for a boy! Thanks for your comment.

Thank you for sharing the pattern. My daughter loves the hat and the flower. I always have trouble making flowers. This flower pattern was simple.quick and fun. Friends are asking me to make them for their baby girls along with the hat. Thank you.

Thank you for sharing your pattern with us! I am currently making this hat for my friend's niece. I have complete the hat, but I'm having trouble with the flower. Completed round 3, so I have the 7 petals. I'm not sure how to slip stitch around the post. I took a look at the picture but can't get it. : (

Anneliese said...

@Anonymous: Hi, this slip stitching is my way of avoiding fastening off and weaving in a bunch of ends. Truth is, it doesn't realy much matter how or where you slip stitch, you just need to get down to that first row of double crochet so you can work the next round of petals. You could sl st into the post, or around it you just want to work your way down. I hope that helps!

I really like this hat and would love to make some for my daughter. (And perhaps sell them in the future.) I tried to open the PDF for the smaller size but it won't come up at all. Could you please email it to me? kiwi.kirstie@gmail.com

I absolutely love this pattern! It's adorable and super easy to make. I am opening an etsy shop and I was wondering if you would allow me to sell hats made from this pattern? With proper credit, of course.

Love this pattern! The photos are precious. I've made it to round 9 on the 3-6 mon size and am having some trouble. I actually got to round 12 and realized that when I was suppose to be "repeating round 9" each time somehow there was an increase each row so I tore it all out. How can I avoid this increase? It's hard for me to see how there won't be in increase with the chain 2 being counted as a HDC, so each round starts with two stitches in the top of the previous chain 2. What am I missing? I'm not SURE I understand what you mean by "1hdc in same space as last sl st." I've taken that to mean that when you chain 2 you then hdc in the same space (top of previous round's chain two).

Thanks! Hoping to finish this up for our little girl due in May. :) And make it in a few more colors too. I love your site! Thanks for all the awesome patterns!!

These are lovely and I would love to make them, but I can't figure out how to print the pattern. I just get pictures. I don't have a facebook account and I don't want one so I'm out of luck with the download. Is there a trick to printing this? Thanks for the wonderful post and your time.

Thanks for putting the pattern up; it's so easy to follow your instructions! I do have one more to make, but the little girl is 15mos old and the patterns jump from sizes 12 to 18mos. She was a premie and is still very petite but does have a lot of curly hair, so I was wondering if you have any suggestions on adjusting the pattern to fit a 15mos old. Or would you recommend that I just use the 18mos pattern?

I'm not on Flickr, but here's a link to the cloches I've made so far... I really enjoyed making these! Thank you again for the pattern!

Cute hat! I'm having a heck of a time with the decrease row for the 6-12 month pattern. Have ripped it out 4 times now. Had 56 stitches on the previous row, followed the pattern for decrease row and am left with 3 spaces. What am I doing wrong??

tTank you so much for this cute pattern! Is it normal to get a line on one side of the hat? I am a total newbie and I'm still trying to figure out the shell edging as well...

Anneliese said...

@Kristyn: You should have 52 stitches from the previous row—somehow you are getting some extra increases. However this doesn’t really matter as long as the shape looks good—you will just have a slightly larger hat. You may want to add a row or two extra before the decrease (maintain your stitch count) so the hat is a bit taller too, depending on the shape of your baby’s head. If you maintain the 56 stitch count, after working the decrease row you will have some extra stitches. You could just hdc in them and then slip stitch to finish. If you rework the hat and start with 52 stitch count the decrease row shoudl work out as planned. I hope that helps!

Anneliese said...

@Anonymous: yes, you should end up with a line--it's the seam--running from the top to the bottom of the hat. You are doing it correctly!

Anonymous said...

Hi! I am a beginner and I can't get past Round 3. What does it mean when you say "in base of beginning ch-2?' I'm interpreting it as doing a hdc in the slip stitch. Please help. I would love to finish this. I just think it is so darling!

@Anonymous/Robera: You can follow the increase pattern and add rows to make this a bigger hat. I hope that helps!

Hi, I love this pattern, but by the time I get to row 9 I end up with 53 stitches instead of 52 because of the chain 2 and hdc in last slip stitch. I am basically having the same problem that Rochelle had in February 11 of 2012. I maybe understanding the instructions wrong. Could you please give me some tips. Thanks

Anonymous said...

I'm totally confused on the flower where you have to slip stitch around the 1st DC post. Do you have a video on this somewhere were I can watch how it's done? I'm still pretty new to the crochet world. Thanks
Tammy

Anneliese said...

@Anonymous: Hi Tammy, this step is a little work-around to avoid breaking the yarn at this point and attaching it somewhere else. There isn't a really exact way to do it, you just want to work your yarn up that post without creating too much bulk, so a slip stitch it perfect for that. Your essentially hiding the yarn to get to where you need to work next. I hope that helps!
