Crochet: Sedge Stitch Cowl (Tutorial for Waverly)

Still working on Christmas gifts? I am with you! I have been guilty of working on gifts (hats one year, scarves the next) as the guests were arriving! I just can't resist the idea of having a little something handmade for everyone.

Well, this Sedge Stitch Cowl makes that compulsion possible. You could make it in a few short hours! Make a couple in one evening!

It's one-size-fits-all, so you don't have to worry about sizing. Just pick your favorite color of yarn. It's the perfect stocking stuffer.

I designed the pattern for this cowl to share for Waverly's 12 Bloggers of Christmas series. I'm so excited to be participating with this great list of creative women. All sorts of holiday inspiration...

I used the Waverly for Bernat yarn in "Gypsy Gold" for this project (did you know they now have yarn?). While in the past I haven't been much of a "yellow" person, it has been growing on me the past couple years! I want it in my garden now, used a bit of it for a recent birthday party, and I think if it's in a strong shade like this I could even get away with wearing it.

The sedge stitch has such a great texture. Using two strands together makes the work go quickly!  And gives the stitch pattern even more depth. The cowl is very snuggly, but still soft and lightweight. Have I sold you yet?

I would wear it all day over a t-shirt or even a crisp shirt, or over a lightweight sweater, or throw it on with my coat. Guess I'll have to make one for myself too!

 SEDGE STITCH COWL

Size: One size fits all. (The finished cowl measures 27" around and 7" high.)

You'll need:
  • 2 skeins Waverly for Bernat Gypsy Gold worsted weight (category 4) yarn
  • N-13 9mm crochet hook
  • tapestry needle for finishing
Abbreviations:
Note: If you are new to crochet please check out my How to Crochet series.

To Make:

Using two strands of yarn (pull one from each skein), chain 60. Turn.

Row 1: Skip the first two chain stitches from the hook (counts as a single crochet) and work 2 double crochet stitches in the next chain stitch.

*Skip the next 2 chains and work one single crochet and 2 double crochet in next chain**.

Repeat from * to ** until the last 3 chain stitches, skip 2 chain stitches, single crochet in last chain stitch.

You have just crocheted a total of 20 repeats of this pattern (single crochet, 2 double crochet).

Row 2: Chain 1 (counts as a single crochet), turn, work 2 double crochet in the first single crochet.

*Skip the next 2 double crochet, work a single crochet and 2 double crochet in the next single crochet**.

Repeat from * to ** across the row until you come to the last three stitches...

and work a single crochet in the turning chain at the end of the row.

Rows 3-13: Repeat Row 2. (Piece should measure about 7 inches.)

Fasten off.

Seam the short ends of your piece to form the cowl. (I like to use a mattress stitch—how-to here.)

Weave in the yarn ends. Wear! Or gift!

Anneliese,
Thanks so much for sharing this great pattern. I have to tell you that it was a life saver. I made 4 of these this weekend for my Mom, Sister, Sister in Law and Mother in Law. The in-laws are coming into town this weekend for the holiday and the ladies will be getting these as gifts. We dont normally exchange with the adults but I just could not pass these up. I used Lion Brand Homespun yarn and only used 1 strand instead of 2. It worked perfectly and the cowl is so warm and squishy. I have to stock up on some more yarn so I can make a few of these for myself. I might have to go with the mustard color like yours. Thanks again for a great pattern!

Anneliese,
So far I've made four of them in various colors (but used Caron Simply Soft yarn)and they turned out so nice. The texture is wonderful. Thanks for sharing this lovely pattern. Always happy to find inspiration here-- it abounds! :)

Great tutorial! Making this with a chunkier yarn (category 5) double strand but still used the N hook. Almost finished, can't wait to wear! Thank you!

I would like to make one that's longer so it can be wrapped around more than once. Would it work if I made sure I did a multiple of 4 or 5, or 20? (Just thinking of what would be good that divides into 20).
Thanks in advance and for the lovely pattern!

Anneliese said...

@gerpie: I would try doubling or tripling the pattern as it's written. The stitch repeat is in 3s, so you want to stay divisible by that. Sounds cute!

THanks so much for sharing this tutorial. I made myself a mobius cowl with this pattern today. I made it a little bit longer and then twisted the ends to make it into a mobius.

Love this pattern!!!

Thank you, thank you - very easy pattern to follow! I'm working up a few of these real quick for gifts and I'm using a chunky, fuzzy yarn instead of 2 worsted weight (it's called Charisma by Loops & Threads; I found it on sale at Michaels and it's really soft)- so far it seems to work really well with your pattern too. Beautiful!

Just finished my first in black/hot pint turned out amazing. My daughters friends want them.

Love this pattern! I made one for my daughter (she's 6) and it fit her perfectly but I'm not sure it would fit a regular adult? I used a 9mm hook and category 4 yarn (Patons Canadiana) just like you but still it came out on the small side. I plan on making one for myself and I was wondering if adding another 20 chains (from 60 to 80) would work or will that affect the pattern? I thought that as long as I stayed with an even number of chains it would be okay. I'm also going to try and use the Waverly yarn you used and see if that makes a difference!

Great pattern, thank you! One question... You said you like to join ends with a slipstitch, but the link you gave is for joining with a whipstitch.

Anneliese said...

@Anonymous: You are welcome to make and sell these. Please credit Aesthetic Nest for the pattern. Thanks for asking!

@Grineeda Hobo: I made a mistake while typing--should have said I like the whipstitch or mattress stitch for seaming, Thanks for asking.

Thank you!!!!! will surely give credit to aesthetic nest for patteren

Thanks for a great tutorial! I made this on Saturday night in a super chunky yarn (only one strand) using a 12mm hook and it turned out great and perfect for an extra gift for my mum on Mother's Day the next day! I am just starting another for myself now and looking forward to wearing it tomorrow, so quick and easy, thanks!

thank you so much! i'm making this for my SIL for xmas. it's going to be beautiful!

mine is coming out too small. i'm using bulky yarn, cast on 60, 9 mm hook but its only 22 inches around which is too small. can't figure out what i'm doing wrong. how do i determine how many more stitches to cast on to make this reach 27 inches like yours?

Anneliese said...

@Jen: It could be that the bulky yarn you chose has a slightly different gauge. (See my post on Gauge here: http://www.aestheticnest.com/2013/03/how-to-crochet-11-understanding-gauge.html ) You could try going up one hook size and see if that results in a chain of the right length. Or you could add more chain stitches until you get to 27". Just be sure the count is divisible by 3. I'm guessing if you stick with the same hook you may need to chain about 78. I hope that helps!

jen said...

oh thank you kindly anneliese! it's a wonderful pattern. i will try 78 stitches and will look at your gauge post. happy holidays!
